What is EMDR?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. Desensitizing happens on the intensity of disturbing emotions felt during distressing or traumatic events. Reprocessing experiences that did not undergo the needed processing in real time leaves you empowered to take on the future. You can remove negative self-talk, anxiety, physical discomfort, and change how you cope with challenges.

How can I be sure that therapy will work?

Dozens of studies confirm EMDR’s effectiveness, even after only a few sessions. The treatment includes measures of your improvement during each appointment, as well as outside of the session.

What is couples' therapy like with Kimberley?

What is the benefit of talking to a counsellor versus my spouse, friends, or family?

I can be more objective than a spouse, friend or family member. People to whom you are close may respond to your situation in a way that’s influenced by their own values, needs, and history with you. As a therapist, I support your needs and your best interests. I also apply my knowledge and training in trauma, anxiety, addiction, and couples’ work, as well as other specialties, to help you meet your goals.

What about mental diagnosis codes?

I don’t view my clients as having mental health disorders or pathologies. I see my clients as having understandable reactions to upsetting life events, or to the inevitable ups and downs of life.

How long does therapy take?

Instead of waiting months or years to feel the effectiveness of therapy, most people require only 3 – 12 sessions of EMDR to witness real and significant improvement.

Can I work with you without doing EMDR?

You are always in control with your therapy, and EMDR is not suitable for all people. However, I like to ask my clients which they would prefer: If they had a broken leg, would they rather I empathize and help them find skills to cope with their broken leg and their pain, or would they rather fix the problem? Most people would rather fix the problem. My orientation as a therapist is not just short-term symptom relief. Instead, we will find and treat the root causes of your present-day problems, so you have lasting improvement.

I don’t want to have to tell you all the details of what happened. How then can I do therapy?

Unlike previous therapies, with EMDR you don’t have to tell the whole traumatic story. We don’t have to talk a lot about what happened. With EMDR we can just set it up, and let your adaptive information processing system do the healing.
